A technology class just for girls?

Posted by nancyscofield on October 26, 2006

Thanks for your ideas, everyone. I appreciate it. Keep ‘em coming!

Here’s an entry I posted on the Women of the Web 2.0 site last night. Please feel free to give me your thoughts on this also.

My daughter gets credit for this idea (she’s pretty cool!)

What if we had a technology class just for girls? (Possible name for the class–GIFT: Girls in Fun Technology

So my questions are:
What would that class look like? What tools/skills would be taught? What kind of equipment/space would be needed? What grant money is out there that would help get such a program going?

I’d love to hear your input. If we could design the “ultimate” technology class, focusing on girls, what would it be?

Thanks for your ideas!

If I were designing a class and thinking really big!!! I would design a face 2 face , f2f, class and then create a blog, wiki or podcast and share all the great insights with others. You must know all this social learning and read/write web is all about the conversations. Please share your project at WOW2!
    You go girls!

    Hello Mrs. Scofield,

The reason I think girls don’t perticipate in classes like media is because it seems like the class would specialize in men dioing that kind of work. Our society has different things for different sexes and a media class would seem to me like it would be for men. A class such as dance would be a class more likely for a women to take. Even though I know that this is not true because I know I can do anything I put my mind to, that is just the way some people think. I also think the reason girls don’t partake in such classes is because girls are more dominate than males and like to do things thier way. when things don’t go the way they want to, they tend to get emotional and angry at the people who change or don’t agree with thier ideas. And honestly who would want to put themsleves through that kind of stress. But the reasons i have metioned are my own opinions and I cannot tell you what goes through other girls’ minds as to why they dont want to take a media class.

i think the reason girls don’t sign up for the class is because we feel it is a mans job to work the equipment and handle the technical things. when weman are justs as able to handly it as there are. although girls are more into singng and dancing we should join in with out having the feeling like we dont belong.

    Mrs. Scofield,
This is actually a tough situation to explain. I believe that most girls aren’t as interested as boys in technology because boys have a higher self confidence and positive attitude about computers. This is mainly because boys are more likely to enroll in computer science classes and it has always been that way. I don’t think that girls want to get interested in computers and change the way it’s always been. I also think that girls are more into shopping, hanging out with friends, and things of that sort, and boys are more likely to go home after school, use the computer, and then come to school and have more experience. This is just the stereotypical roles of each gender.

The plant tour of the GCC Facility is scheduled for 4 PM on September 27th. Take the Stem Beach exit. Go across the rail tracks to the plant entrance (you will see the GCC sign) and drive to the guard shack a few miles down the plant road. I will meet you there.

I look forward to meeting everyone at the plant.
